What is Gynecology?
Gynecology is a medical specialty dealing with the health of the female reproductive system, which includes organs such as the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina, and vulva. It also covers breast health since breasts are closely linked to the female reproductive cycle. Doctors who specialize in gynecology are called gynecologists. They provide general healthcare services for women, conduct regular check-ups, perform diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and administer treatments for various disorders affecting the female reproductive system.
Gynecologists treat a wide range of diseases and conditions, some common ones being:
- Menstrual irregularities, heavy periods, or painful menstruation
- Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Ovarian cysts
- Breast lumps or abnormalities
- Infertility concerns and hormonal imbalances
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Pelvic pain and discomfort
- Cancer of the reproductive organs, e.g., ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, etc.
Apart from addressing specific problems, routine visits to a gynecologist are crucial for preventative care measures too. These may involve performing Pap smears for cervical cancer screening, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) tests, clinical breast examinations, pelvic examinations, contraceptive counseling, sex education, preconception planning, and managing pregnancy and childbirth.
When do you need to visit gynecologist?
Typically, young females should have their first gynecological visit between ages 13 and 15 years old. However, if there are any concerning symptoms before reaching puberty, seeking professional advice earlier on would be advisable.
Adult women must schedule periodic appointments based on individual needs and history, typically once every year after becoming sexually active or starting age 21 regardless of sexual activity status.
If you experience unusual bleeding patterns, severe period cramps, persistent pain, changes in bowel habits, urinary frequency, vaginal discharge, difficulty getting pregnant, unexplained weight loss, or discover a lump somewhere in the breast area, consulting a gynecologist promptly becomes imperative. Regular check-ups ensure potential issues get detected early, enhancing prognoses significantly, thus preserving overall feminine wellbeing throughout different life stages.
